Who am i ?

Module 1

Stay healthy

Colour in all the pictures that keep your body healthy. (look carefully – there are a few “rascals” hiding amongst the pictures!)

Why do we become ill?

Diseases are spread by viruses and bacteria.Often the diseases spread throughout a particular area and sometimes across the whole country. The diseases are transmitted in various ways.

Let’s find out what makes us ill.

Viruses:

A virus lives in a living cell inside your body and multiplies quickly. Viruses act like parasites and break down the body tissue. Viruses are much smaller than bacteria.

What are bacteria?

Bacteria are alive and are unicellular (one cell) organisms which multiply through cell division. Bacteria are important to people, especially when food is digested.

Some bacteria cause diseases because they break down body tissue or secrete toxic substances. Fortunately there are many medicines to destroy bacteria.

Choose the right word in brackets and complete the sentences:

( run; bones and teeth; vaccinated; sweetness; rest)

  1. When we are babies we are v to prevent illness.
  2. My body needs a lot of r .
  3. I r everyday to stay fit.
  4. Milk makes my b and t strong.
  5. Too much s is not good for my body.

Fill in the following words in the appropriate column:

Smaller; toxic substances; digestion; unicellular; fast

Viruses Bacteria

What does your body need to stay healthy?

Group work:

  • Design a poster with pictures of wholesome foods.
  • Design a poster with pictures of unwholesome foods.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of certain foodstuffs in the classroom.

Discuss the following pictures in groups.

  • How can you take care of your body?
  • Explain why you should take care of your body

What is aids (acquired immunity deficiency syndrome)?

Virus that destroys the white blood cells.

Your body is protected by an immune system consisting of white blood cells. The virus destroys the white blood cells. Then there is nothing left to protect you against diseases.

The virus can enter the blood in a number of ways. Here are three examples:

  • A mother who carries the virus, can transmit it to her unborn baby.
  • Through blood transfusion (if the blood is already contaminated).
  • Through contaminated needles.

Class discussion:

A menu for a very sick person.

  1. Compile a menu for somebody who has been ill for a long time, and must now recuperate at home. It is very important that the person takes plenty of vitamins and fluids. Keep it in mind.
  2. Design an attractive and tempting front cover for your menu. The patient must feel hungry immediately when he/she sees it.

A healthy body ensures a healthy mind.

Group activity: outside

  • You and a friend must piggy-back each other.
  • Race the other children.
  • Complete the squares with either a correction mark or a cross.
Did you enjoy playing outside?
Did you quarrel?
Was it important that anybody won?

Design your own slogan for Grade 3.

I am alive !

Assessment

Learning Outcomes(LO’s)
LIFE ORIENTATIONLO 1
HEALTH PROMOTION The learner will be able to make informed decisions regarding personal, community and environmental health.
Assessment Standards(ASs)
We know this when the learner:
1.1 compares healthy and poor dietary habits and describes the effects of such habits on personal health;1.3 discusses myths surrounding communicable diseases, and the causes and prevention of these, including HIV/AIDS.
LO 3
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The learner will be able to use acquired life skills to achieve and extend personal potential to respond effectively to challenges in his or her world.
Assessment Standards(ASs)
We know this when the learner:
3.1 describes own abilities, interests and strengths;3.2 explains why own body should be respected;3.5 identifies group work skills and applies them consistently.
LO 4
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT AND MOVEMENT The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and participate in, activities that promote movement and physical development.
Assessment Standards(ASs)
We know this when the learner:
4.2 performs basic movements in sequence and with repetition, with and without equipment;4.4 participates in play and describes its effects on the body.
ARTS AND CULTURELO 1
CREATING, INTERPRETING AND PRESENTING The learner will be able to create, interpret and present work in each of the art forms.
Assessment Standards(ASs)
We know this when the learner:
1.8 ( visual arts ) – creates artworks which demonstrate the translation of own ideas, feelings and perceptions into two-dimensional and three-dimensional work using appropriate and available materials, with a focus on mixing of primary and secondary colours.
LO 4
EXPRESSING AND COMMUNICATINGThe learner will be able to use enquiry skills to investigate the past and present.
4.3 ( drama ) – uses the voice, gesture and body shape to express feelings and thoughts.
NATURAL SCIENCESLO 1
SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONSThe learner will be able to act confidently on curiosity about natural phenomena, and to investigate relationships and solve problems in scientific, technological and environmental contexts.
Assessment Standards(ASs)
We know this when the learner:
1.2 ( does ) - participates constructively in the activity with understanding of its purpose.
1.2. 2 answers the questions, “Why are you doing this?” and “How are you trying to find that out?” and “Is your plan working?”

Memorandum

  • A class discussion about what my body needs to remain healthy.

Why do I become ill? Explain the two concepts “viruses” and “bacteria” beforehand. It is new to the learners.

  • Discuss diseases of children in general with the class.
  • What is AIDS?
  • A get-well-soon card may be made on a separate piece of cardboard.
  • Menu
  • Outdoor play – have a competition; let them race.

Designing a slogan for Grade 3 can take the form of a competition. Award prizes for the most original poster, the name, neatness, etc.

Questions & Answers

Three charges q_{1}=+3\mu C, q_{2}=+6\mu C and q_{3}=+8\mu C are located at (2,0)m (0,0)m and (0,3) coordinates respectively. Find the magnitude and direction acted upon q_{2} by the two other charges.Draw the correct graphical illustration of the problem above showing the direction of all forces.
Kate Reply
To solve this problem, we need to first find the net force acting on charge q_{2}. The magnitude of the force exerted by q_{1} on q_{2} is given by F=\frac{kq_{1}q_{2}}{r^{2}} where k is the Coulomb constant, q_{1} and q_{2} are the charges of the particles, and r is the distance between them.
Muhammed
What is the direction and net electric force on q_{1}= 5µC located at (0,4)r due to charges q_{2}=7mu located at (0,0)m and q_{3}=3\mu C located at (4,0)m?

what is a capacitor?
Raymond Reply
Capacitor is a separation of opposite charges using an insulator of very small dimension between them. Capacitor is used for allowing an AC (alternating current) to pass while a DC (direct current) is blocked.

which has a higher temperature, 1cup of boiling water or 1teapot of boiling water which can transfer more heat 1cup of boiling water or 1 teapot of boiling water explain your . answer
Ramon Reply
I believe temperature being an intensive property does not change for any amount of boiling water whereas heat being an extensive property changes with amount/size of the system.
Someone
Scratch that
Someone
temperature for any amount of water to boil at ntp is 100⁰C (it is a state function and and intensive property) and it depends both will give same amount of heat because the surface available for heat transfer is greater in case of the kettle as well as the heat stored in it but if you talk.....
Someone
about the amount of heat stored in the system then in that case since the mass of water in the kettle is greater so more energy is required to raise the temperature b/c more molecules of water are present in the kettle

Two bodies attract each other electrically. Do they both have to be charged? Answer the same question if the bodies repel one another.
JALLAH Reply
No. According to Isac Newtons law. this two bodies maybe you and the wall beside you. Attracting depends on the mass och each body and distance between them.

What is specific heat capacity
Destiny Reply
Specific heat capacity is a measure of the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by one degree Celsius (or Kelvin). It is measured in Joules per kilogram per degree Celsius (J/kg°C).
