We are currently seeking a Cataloguing & Metadata Technician to join our Library team.

Job Overview:
Cataloguing & Metadata Technician

Creates and maintains print, electronic and non-book bibliographic records in KPU's Library database and applies current cataloguing rules and standards from a variety of resources including the Library of Congress Classification system (LCC), Library and Archives Canada classification system (LAC), Brian Deer Classification System (BDCS), National Library of Medicine classification system (NLM), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), MAchine-Readable Coding Language (MARC 21), Anglo-American Cataloguing rules (AACR2), and Resource Description and Access (RDA).

Education and Experience

  • Related training with two years current original and derivative cataloguing experience preferred.
    A two-year library technician diploma is required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Two years of current working experience using an automated library system for original and derivative cataloguing in all formats including subject analysis and classification preferred.
  • Full working knowledge of automated library technical services procedures, particularly in cataloguing and processing.
  • Full working knowledge of the MARC bibliographical format for all types of library materials, print and non-print.
  • Full working knowledge of batch editing software applications for electronic resources.
  • Full working knowledge of the Library of Congress, Library and Archives Canada, and the National Library of Medicine classification schemes and subject heading authorities.
  • Understanding of Brian Deer Classification System (particularly SFU's localized version of BDCS) and its application in local institutions.
  • Full working knowledge and proven ability to interpret cataloguing rules and local cataloguing standards.
  • Proven online searching and editing skills using a variety of bibliographical databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to use tact and discretion with a variety of people and situations and work in a team environment.
  • Fundamental computer literacy skills and keyboarding skills and experience working in an electronic environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of English language, written and verbal.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with minimum of direct supervision, to establish priorities, achieve deadlines, problem solve and function well under pressure.
  • Ability to lift moderate to heavy weight library materials and move materials on carts.
  • Ability to tolerate close proximity to / handling of dusty materials.
  • Ability to travel between campuses is required.

00pm.Shift can be adjusted as agreed between candidate and supervisor, after the initial training period (approx.
3 months).
Tentative start date for this position is May 20, 2025.

As per the KPU-BCGEU Collective Agreement, qualified internal applicants within the BCGEU bargaining unit are given first consideration in filling this position.

Salary Information

Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
