Indigenous Student Recruitment Officer (Health Careers) - AA2 (AESES)
New Budget-Funded Continuing Full-Time

Responsibilities:

  1. Implement the University's enrolment management strategy of establishing meaningful contact with prospective Indigenous students by representing the University at rural, remote and urban high schools, primarily within Manitoba but also possibly in other Canadian provinces and acts as University spokesperson at Career Days, Career Symposiums, and other public events.
  2. Work collaboratively with the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences staff and Ongomiizwin to assist in the development of a recruitment plan that focuses on highlighting pathways to health careers within University of Manitoba.
  3. Manage projects and activities to remain within budget and on schedule.
  4. Work collaboratively to support existing stakeholder engagement sessions that focus on building relationships with health careers in community and/or create and lead new engagement sessions.
  5. Ensure projects adhere to UM ISRCR framework and all documentation is maintained appropriately for all projects and initiatives.
  6. Conduct data analysis and authoring reports based on results for ISRCR unit.
  7. Take part in any ongoing data collection with other UM departments.
  8. Report on findings to relevant stakeholders as deemed appropriate.
  9. Provide recommendations to Director of ISRCR and RFHS leadership.
  10. Assist with identification of new opportunities and the implementation of new programs.
  11. Support other department initiatives and team members as required.
  12. Lead outreach efforts, meeting with prospective students, parents, counsellors and community members to help engage learners to consider UM as a top contender for pursuing their health careers, attend meetings and deliver presentation to audiences such as organizations, agencies, classrooms etc.
  13. Undertake event planning and coordinate outreach activities to engage.
  14. Conduct in-person, telephone and written (individual and group) advising sessions with prospective students and their families.
  15. Provide health care specific seminars on career options at the undergraduate level.
  16. Make appropriate referrals as required.
  17. Collaborate with the faculty members, advisors, counsellors and students.
  18. Develop programming and services to meet the needs of identified groups.
  19. Make cold calls, schedule visits, and conduct marketing and follow-up calls.
  20. Research and create information sessions.
  21. Develop in-house self-directed health care focused workshops, student guides and resource materials.
  22. Establish, maintain, and follow up on contacts made at the schools/communities, using a database of possible students.
  23. Encourage and deliver campus tours for groups and individuals, including the coordination of participation from Indigenous programs, faculty, and student representatives at the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.
  24. Assist at all special events organized by Indigenous Student Recruitment and Community Relations.
  25. Provide assistance to the ISRCR team (Director, Student Recruitment, the Indigenous Student Recruitment Team, Domestic Student Recruitment Officers, Admissions Representatives, and the Student Recruitment Events Coordinator) in meeting common goals of service and promotion to prospective applicants, applicants, and admitted students.
  26. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  1. Minimum Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Communications, Marketing, Education or related field.
  2. Prefer a recent University of Manitoba graduate and/or someone trained in a health career related field.
  3. Valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and clean driving record required.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Two years directly related experience is required.
  2. Must have a wide-ranging knowledge of health careers and programs offered at the UM.
  3. Experience, knowledge, and competency with Indigenous cultures, history and community protocols required.
  4. Knowledge of Indigenous politics as they relate to education and community visits required.
  5. Personal experience as an Indigenous student attending a post-secondary institution in an urban setting is required. (Experience as a student or staff member of the University of Manitoba preferred)
  6. Experience with program development, workshop facilitation and public speaking is required.
  7. Experience working with students or youth or in the post-secondary or public school system required.
  8. Public relations, communications and/or marketing experience preferred.
  9. Three or more years of experience in a First Nation or Metis community an asset.
  10. Knowledge of other programs, especially web development programs preferred.
  11. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint required.
  2. Must be able to work within time and budget constraints.
  3. Strong written competencies including report and grant writing skills required.
  4. Strong verbal communication skills that support dialogue with the various stakeholders, organizations, communities, campus partners etc required.
  5. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in cooperative ventures.
  6. Must be able to clearly project voice and to hold audiences' attention.
  7. Must be able to speak for long periods without tiring or losing enthusiasm.
  8. Must have an innovative and flexible approach to problem-solving.
  9. Must be an empathetic and careful listener.
  10. Must be very reliable and self-motivated, and able to work independently without supervision when necessary.
  11. Must be a great team player.
  12. Ability to meet, engage and build collaborative relationships with Indigenous contacts in community required.
  13. Demonstrated ability to incorporate Indigenous values and ways of knowing, being and doing into student programming and interpersonal interactions required.
  14. Ability to conduct research independently required.
  15. Should have a working knowledge of marketing techniques.
  16. Should have a basic understanding of the University of Manitoba health care programs and entrance requirements.
  17. Ability to use creative thinking to identify and execute opportunities required.
  18. Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality with respect to all communications and records is required.
  19. Able to learn quickly and retain new knowledge is required.
  20. Ability to work and to problem-solve in relatively independent situations required.
