The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing. The Canonical Kernel Team seeks highly talented industry veterans with a proven track record in operating systems kernel development or low-level system engineering to lead in architecture, implementation, and delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernel aspects including :

Driving engagements with Silicon and Cloud partners for optimal platform solutions
Leading mitigation of vulnerabilities and active kernel hardening
Architecting performance and correctness enhancements for Ubuntu Linux
Streamlining packaging and distribution of complex third-party components
Developing scalable delivery methods to meet quality and schedule standards

While not a formal managerial role, strong leadership and people skills are essential to guide engineers and coordinate with external teams. We seek individuals with deep technical expertise in operating system kernels and distributions, combined with leadership initiative. Experience equivalent to 15+ years in industry is preferred, though we value ability and circumstances.

Location : Remote roles available worldwide, with some aspects linked to specific regions.

Role responsibilities include :

Setting technical direction and leading a team of engineers on key Ubuntu Linux kernel aspects
Collaborating with management to track and coordinate initiatives
Working closely with senior technical leadership to ensure Ubuntu remains a top Linux distribution

Candidate profile :

Self-motivated, well-organized, and able to thrive remotely
Expertise in C programming
Experience with
nix kernel and distribution, Linux experience preferred
Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting
Strong knowledge of git version control
Experience with software packaging formats; Ubuntu / Debian / Snap experience highly regarded
Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks

Nice-to-have skills include :

RTOS and real-time performance analysis
Kernel patching and debugging experience
Device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering
Experience with Rust related to Linux kernel
