About the Role We are the public body responsible for preserving and championing England's historic environment.
Historic England is seeking a Development Advice Team Leader to join our team.
In this role, you will lead the Development Advice Team in providing statutory and non-statutory advice to sustain the significance of historic places, buildings, and sites while securing their broader societal value.
The position requires excellent negotiation, stakeholder engagement skills, and a deep understanding of the planning system and architecture.
Key Responsibilities Lead the Development Advice Team in providing advice on the sustainable management of historic places, buildings, and sites.
Engage with stakeholders, including local authorities, communities, religious bodies, government agencies, sectoral partners, and amenity societies, to develop and sustain strategic relationships for Development Advice.
Allocate responsibilities for statutory and non-statutory planning advice, ensuring timely delivery and excellent customer service.
Provide advice on management agreements, public inquiries, examinations in public, and other legal or procedural matters related to historic environments.
Mentor, support, and manage a team of Historic Environment Planning Advisors, Inspectors, Assistant Inspectors, and Landscape Architects.
Ensure compliance with legal obligations and internal policies, including health and safety, equality and diversity, finance, procurement, information security, and people management.
Contribute to the advancement of Historic England's Future Strategy and Corporate Plan.
Qualifications and Experience Extensive experience managing change to heritage assets, particularly through the planning system.
Strong negotiation, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
A solid understanding of architecture and urban design, especially in urban and suburban contexts.
Demonstrable capability in mentoring, supporting colleagues, and performance management.
Experience handling high-pressure situations and external scrutiny with professionalism.
Excellent team-working, collaboration, and project management skills.
