The Australian Research Council Discovery Project on 'Remedies for Victims of Modern Slavery in Indo-Pacific Fisheries' is a four-year research program led by Professor Justine Nolan (UNSW), Professor Natalie Klein (UNSW), and Professor Shelley Marshall (RMIT). The position will be connected to the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW Sydney and associated with the Business and Human Rights Centre at RMIT via Professor Marshall.

This project aims to identify practical and legal obstacles to remedies and propose solutions under Australian, regional, and international laws. By joining our team, you will contribute to research advancing business and human rights scholarship and the field of human rights at sea.

The Discovery Research Associate will report to Professor Justine Nolan and will have no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Conduct high-quality research on modern slavery in fisheries, focusing on remedies.
• Disseminate research through publications, presentations, reports, and submissions.
• Present findings at conferences and in media outlets.
• Co-design and manage research streams, including international collaborations.
• Coordinate research activities and contribute to meeting project milestones.
• Participate in meetings and other research and administrative activities.

Requirements for Level A include:

• A Masters or PhD in international human rights law, labour law, law of the sea, maritime/admiralty law, or related experience.
• Ability to undertake independent, high-quality research.
• Track record of research outputs with potential for influence.
• Potential to present at scholarly meetings and conferences.
• Ability to collaborate across disciplines and build relationships.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
