  • A Gastroenterologist is a medical specialist who focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders affecting the digestive system, which includes the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system. Gastroenterologists treat a wide range of conditions, from common issues like acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to more serious conditions like Crohn's disease, liver cirrhosis, and cancer.

What Qualifies You for the Role:

  • MBBS or MBchB or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution AND Completion of specialty qualification recognized by Dubai Health Authority or Health Authority of Abu Dhabi or Ministry of Health UAE.
  • Appropriate experience and competence in all aspects of Gastroenterology.
  • Certification in Basic and Advanced Life Support.
  • Minimum 5+ years relevant experience at a specialist level, since gaining higher qualification.
Desired candidate profile

1. Clinical Expertise in Gastrointestinal Health:

  • Knowledge of Digestive Diseases :
    A thorough understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the GI system, including the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.
  • Diagnostic Skills :
    Expertise in diagnosing a variety of GI conditions through patient history, physical examination, lab tests, imaging studies (e.g., CT scans, MRIs, endoscopies), and other diagnostic tools.
  • Medical Treatment :
    Ability to prescribe appropriate medical therapies, including medications to manage conditions like acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or liver disease.

2. Procedural Expertise:

  • Endoscopy :
    Performing procedures like gastroscopy , colonoscopy , and endoscopic ultrasound to visualize the GI tract, obtain tissue samples, and treat certain conditions (e.g., removing polyps, placing stents).
  • Biopsy Techniques :
    Performing biopsies of tissues from the GI tract or liver for histopathological examination, helping to diagnose conditions like cancer or infections.
  • Therapeutic Interventions :
    Expertise in managing conditions through non-surgical techniques, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for bile duct issues or managing varices with endoscopic band ligation.

3. Patient Communication:

  • Patient History Taking :
    Being able to take a thorough and effective medical history to understand symptoms, risk factors, and relevant background information.
  • Explaining Complex Conditions :
    Explaining complex diagnoses and treatment plans to patients in a clear, compassionate, and accessible manner.
  • Patient Education :
    Educating patients on lifestyle changes, diet, medication regimens, and other factors necessary for managing chronic conditions like IBD, hepatitis, or liver cirrhosis.

4. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking:

  • Diagnostic Accuracy :
    Being able to interpret various diagnostic results (such as blood tests, imaging, and biopsy results) to identify the root cause of digestive symptoms or conditions.
  • Treatment Plans :
    Developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, often managing both medical and lifestyle interventions to treat chronic and acute conditions.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration :
    Collaborating with other specialists (e.g., oncologists, surgeons, nutritionists) for comprehensive patient care, especially when managing complex cases.

5. Knowledge of Nutrition and Lifestyle Factors:

  • Dietary Counseling :
    Providing advice on nutrition and lifestyle changes to manage conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fatty liver disease, and Crohn's disease.
  • Lifestyle Modification :
    Recommending behavioral changes like weight management, smoking cessation, or alcohol moderation to prevent or manage GI diseases.
