Om die resultate te bepaal, kan ons ’n verskeidenheid van metodes, name en notasies gebruik. ’n Paar algemenes is:

  • ’n persentasie (byvoorbeeld: 50%)
  • ’n verhouding van die totale hoeveelheid uitkomste (byvoorbeeld: ‘vyf uit tien’)
  • ’n breukdeel van een (byvoorbeeld, ½)

Jy sal opmerk dat al drie van die bogenoemde voorbeelde dieselfde waarskynlikheid verteenwoordig. In werklikheid is ENIGE metode van waarskynlikheid gegrond op die volgende proses:

  1. Omskryf 'n proses.
  2. Omskryf die totale maatreël vir alle uitkomste van die proses.
  3. Beskryf die waarskynlikheid van elke moontlike uitkoms van die proses met betrekking tot die totale maatstaf.

Die term “maatstaf” kan verwarrend wees, maar mens kan daaraan dink as ’n liniaal. Wanneer ons ’n liniaal neem wat 1 meter lank is, dan is die helfte van die liniaal 50 sentimeter, ’n kwart van die liniaal is 25 sentimeter, ens. Dit is belangrik om te onhou dat sonder die liniaal maak dit geen sin om te praat van die liniaal afmetinge nie! Trouens, die drie voorbeelde hierbo (50%, ‘vyf uit tien’ en ½) verteenwoordig dieselfde waarskynlikheid, die enigste verskil is hoe die totale maatstaf (liniaal) gedefinieer was. As ons terug gaan en nadink in terme van ’n liniaal beteken 50%, 50 uit 100, of dat ons 50 dele van die oorspronklike 100 dele (sentimeter) gebruik om die uitslag se hoeveelheid te bepaal. Vyf uit tien beteken vyf dele uit die oorspronklike 10 dele (tien sentimeter deeltjies) bepaal die uitslag. In die laaste voorbeeld beteken ½ dat ons die liniaal in twee dele verdeel en sê dat een van daardie twee dele die uitslag bepaal. Onthou net dat hierdie notasies bloot verskillende maniere is om na dieselfde 50 eenhede van die 100 sentimeter liniaal te verwys! In terme van kansrekening stel ons slegs in die verhouding tot die geheel belang.

Alhoewel daar baie maniere bestaan om ’n maatstaf te definieer, is die mees algemeen en maklikste een om ‘1’ as die totale maatstaf te gebruik. Wanneer ons dan ’n munt-opskiet beskou, sal ons sê dat die kans vir kop ½ is (dws helfte van een) en die kans vir stert ook ½. Aan die ander kant, wanneer ons die geval beskou waar die munt nie opgeskiet word nie en tans kop-boontoe lê is die waarskynlikheid van kop nou 1 terwyl die kans vir stert 0 is. Ons kon net sowel 14 as die oorspronklike maatstaf gebruik het. In daardie geval sou die waarskynlikheid vir kop of stert met die opskiet beide 7 uit 14 gewees het, terwyl die waarskynlikheid 14 uit 14 sou wees vir kop as die munt nie opgeskiet is nie en 0 uit 14 vir stert. Soortgelyk, wanneer ons die gooi van ’n dobbelsteen ondersoek, sal dit makliker wees om die maatstaf as 6 te kies en te sê dat die waarskynlikheid dat ’n 4 gegooi word ‘1 uit die 6’ is, gewoonlik sal ons sommer sê dat dit 1/6 is.
