8.13 Exploring high dynamic range imaging: §5.1 conclusion

Although the algorithms introduced in this report for tone mapping are not among the best, they do fulfilltheir goal of preserving highlight and shadow information and the values in-between by using information from multiple images takenat different exposures and combining them into a lower color depth file. To review, we implemented a couple of simple existingalgorithms in MATLAB to see how they worked. We added modifications to these algorithms as necessary, before finally attempting our ownunique algorithms. We used what we had learned from previous courses in DSP and computer graphics to create thesealgorithms.

A natural step in advancing the algorithms presented in this report would be the creation of a tone mappingtechnique which produces images that not only hold the most amount of detail possible, but are also visually appealing to the eye.Although beauty is a subjective entity, producing images with high local contrast combined with good color reproduction and saturationis a good place to start. One way to do this might be to identify areas where large luminance changes occur and to weight the image according to these areasbefore mapping it.
