Засоби масової інформації, їх функціонування та цілісні медіасистеми у кожній країні мають свої особливості. Проте наскільки великими є відмінності між медіасистемами і що їх зумовлює? За допомогою яких параметрів можна характеризувати ці відмінності таким чином, щоб отримати адекватне розуміння національних та регіональних медіасистем? Для медіа демократичних країн американський і італійський науковці Деніел Галлін і Паоло Манчіні у своїй праці 2004 року «Сучасні медіасистеми» виокремили групу критеріїв і на їх основі запропонували моделі, що дають змогу відповісти на поставлені запитання. Слід зазначити, що у своїх моделях Галлін і Манчіні рішуче відкидають нормативні приписи, натомість аналізуючи медіасистеми різних країн та груп країн за їх об’єктивними характеристиками, які можуть бути представлені у кількісному вигляді. Автори розглядають медіасистеми держав Західної Європи і Північної Америки. Результати цього аналізу, з відповідними поправками історичного характеру, є актуальними також для більшості інших країн світу, включно з державами Східної Європи та колишнього СРСР.
