Education & Certifications:

Graduate of a one-year AMA-approved respiratory care program - Required
Licensed by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners - Required
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) - Required
RRT credential or five years of post-graduation experience with a CRT credential - Required
Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA only - Required
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - Required within 90 days of employment
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - Required within 90 days of employment
Experience with RRT - Minimum one year strongly required

Job Summary:

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering high-quality respiratory care to both inpatients and outpatients. Responsibilities include initiating, monitoring, and maintaining various respiratory therapy treatments and technologies in accordance with established departmental protocols and professional standards. The therapist plays a critical role in patient assessment, equipment management, emergency response, and education.

Primary Responsibilities:

Clinical Competency & Patient Care
- Administer bronchodilator therapy using small volume nebulizers and metered dose inhalers
- Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analysis
- Deliver supplemental oxygen therapy
- Initiate and maintain mechanical and non-invasive ventilation
- Respond to adult and pediatric emergency codes
- Assist in high-risk deliveries and respond to Level II nursery needs
- Conduct baseline pulmonary function testing
- Provide intra-hospital patient transports
Advanced Procedures & Occasional Duties
- Assist with bronchoscopy procedures (including emergency and percutaneous tracheostomies)
- Support pulmonary rehabilitation programs
Administrative & Supportive Duties
- Accurately document patient activity and charges
- Act as a mentor and resource for new respiratory therapy staff
- Participate in staff education, community health fairs, and health initiatives
- Ensure adequate equipment and staffing levels; report shortages and issues to lead therapist

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology
In-depth understanding of respiratory care equipment and its clinical applications
Proficiency in infection control practices and equipment sterilization
Strong verbal and telephone communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and engage with patients and families

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and crouching
Routine lifting and moving of patients
Regular handling of equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
Constant hand and finger dexterity; frequent reaching and hearing
Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and moderate noise levels
Requires flexibility to handle stressful situations and work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays as needed
