About the Job
The Airport Design & Construction department is seeking a Senior Construction Safety Specialist with a focus on contractor oversight, safety performance, and training for construction and capital projects at San Diego International Airport. The role involves ensuring safe, compliant workplace conditions across SAN's infrastructure expansion.
The Senior Safety Specialist will oversee safety for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and tenant improvements, including onboarding contractors, conducting site safety audits, and investigating incidents. Responsibilities also include implementing safety programs, facilitating training, and supporting safety audits to promote a proactive safety culture.
This position combines strategic planning with hands-on safety management, offering a chance to influence safety outcomes at a busy airport. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise, field experience, and leadership skills to shape safety practices organization-wide.
What You'll Do:
Contractor & Construction Oversight: Lead safety efforts for construction projects, onboarding contractors, monitoring practices, and ensuring compliance with standards.
Safety Audits & Incident Response: Conduct inspections, hazard assessments, and investigations; determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
Program Development & Implementation: Develop and improve safety programs aligned with construction activities and organizational goals.
Training & Culture Building: Deliver safety training and foster a proactive safety culture across the airport environment.
Performance Monitoring & Compliance: Track safety metrics, identify gaps, and ensure adherence to OSHA and other regulations.
Operational Tasks: Perform safety inspections and incident investigations in areas accessible by Airport Authority vehicles.
The Skills We Are Looking For:
Risk & Regulatory Expertise: Deep knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, ergonomics, vehicle safety, and workers' compensation.
Strategic & Operational Acumen: Ability to develop effective safety programs and align practices with organizational objectives.
Collaboration & Consultation: Build trust, advise stakeholders, and communicate clearly to support safety initiatives.
Leadership & Evaluation: Provide strategic insights, evaluate situations, and influence decision-making to improve safety.
Adaptability & Tech Proficiency: Manage projects under shifting conditions using industry tools for tracking and reporting.
The Experience You Need to Have:
Six years of occupational health and safety experience, with at least two years in a supervisory role, or equivalent education/training/experience.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a major related to safety management or occupational health.
Valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority's vehicle insurance policy.
Preferred Education, Certification, and Licenses:
OSHA 30-hour Construction Training Certificate, Cal/OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training
OSHA HAZWOPER Certification
OSHA 500 Trainer Course
Certifications like ASP, CSP, OHST, CSHM, SMS, or CHST
• Driving is an Essential Function
This role requires regular driving using Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver's license and a good driving record are mandatory. Compliance with all safety and use policies is required, and applicants must acknowledge that driving is an essential function of this role.
