Supervisor I, Clinical Laboratory - Chemistry

Summary
Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and daily supervision of work activities.

Essential Functions
Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees.
Plans, organizes, assigns, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers.
Assists technologists with technical problems and interpretation of results.
Determines work priorities to ensure timely completion of tasks.
Orders and maintains appropriate inventory and laboratory supplies.
Maintains manuals on all Standard Operating Procedures and required records and reports.
Ensures staff adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
Responsible for orientation, training, and competency assessments, ensuring staff:
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining patient test result records.
Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance.
Follow established corrective action policies and procedures when test systems do not meet acceptable performance levels.
Identify and address problems affecting test performance or result reporting, or immediately notify the appropriate supervisor, consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

Education
Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology required or Bachelor's Degree Laboratory Sciences required and Other Certificate/Diploma Clinical Laboratory Sciences required

Licenses and Credentials
Medical Technologist (ASCP) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) preferred
Experience
lab experience 4+ years required and supervisory experience 1-2 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.
• Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgement.
• Must have relatively high level of analytical ability to work with complex instrumentation, resolve technical equipment problems, relate test results to normal and pathological states, and interpret quality control data.
• Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
• Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
• Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately.
• Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Advanced computer skills.
• Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations.
• Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership.
• Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists.
• Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified.
• Must be able to perform as a team member.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
