The Psychologist provides services in a manner consistent with KHSC Mission, Vision and Values and that reflects the core values of Patient and Family Centered Care (dignity, respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration); practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and ethical values as defined by the College of Psychologists of Ontario and other relevant professional organizations; works as a member of an interdisciplinary team to promote and foster a culture of understanding and compassion with a large patient population experiencing diverse health conditions such as chronic pain, and acute / chronic musculoskeletal injury; works to promote, restore and improve the patient's independence and self-management skills including fostering an understanding of their role in their care; assist in the development of strategies to promote wellness, increase quality of life through education, specialized programming and a holistic approach to care towards the goals of supporting return to work, school or other patient / client-identified roles, facilitating access to necessary surgical or procedural care and reducing emergency department visits, hospital admissions and specialist referrals; consults and communicates effectively with professionals, support personnel and other community agencies; advises on best evidence-based practices and ensures that assessment and treatment services are scientifically based and grounded in current research in the field of psychological practice; participates in hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy patient / client-centered environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a member of several interdisciplinary health care teams and collaborates in care plan decision making.
  • Complete appropriate documentation in compliance with professional standards and corporate policies.
  • Develop, review, update, implement and evaluate educational material and programs for patients and family members.
  • Provide educational experience and in-service education to physicians, nursing and other health care professionals including learners.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal competence through continuing education and ongoing critical evaluation of professional experience.
  • Participate on committees and activities of national and provincial professional associations.
  • Record accurate statistics of all professional activities in a workload measurement system.
  • Regularly review all active patients on caseload.
  • Participate in quality management activities.
  • Collaborate in QI and research projects within the clinical area.
  • Integrate clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based care and treatment in the care of patients.
  • Advocate for patients through case rounds, family conferences and program development meetings.
  • Provide psychological assessments, psychotherapy and other treatment to patients within service level agreement.
  • Evaluate the plan of care and the client's progress in relation to the attainment of successful outcomes that are attainable with available resources.
  • Refer patients to other health care professionals or services and make recommendations to consult other medical specialties.
  • Carry out the controlled act of communication of a psychological diagnosis.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D.
    in Clinical Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Current Certification of Registration with the Ontario College of Psychologists, or eligibility for registration in Ontario.
  • Clinical experience in Chronic Pain, WSIB case management or related fields.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience with an appropriate range of program-specific psychological tests, measures and assessment techniques.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience in evidence-based psychological consultation and interventions for those experiencing chronic, complex health conditions and / or injuries.
  • Demonstrated compliance with the ethical and professional practice standards of the profession.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team, to collaborate with community resources and services, and to advocate for the needs of clients.
  • Innovative, independent problem solving and analytical thinking ability.
  • Skills and experience in clinical teaching, education, and research.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant legislation including:
    Personal Health Information Protection Act, Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), Public Hospitals Act, Copyright legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other software systems / databases / health information systems (e.g.
    Cerner, RedCap).
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal, communication, and organization skills.
  • Experience counselling patients with complex chronic pain syndromes and related sequelae (i.e.
    depression, PTSD, sexual dysfunction) preferred.
  • Experience counselling patients who have experienced workplace injury and return to work barriers preferred.
  • Experience in an ambulatory care environment preferred.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
