  3-4 month contract for summer 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding & performance

About Us

Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) is a small Canadian charity founded in 1991. Our goal is to integrate sustainability education into the school system to prepare students for the environmental, social and economic challenges of the 21st century. We take a holistic, vertically-integrated approach, working at all levels (governments, businesses, community members, school boards, faculties of education, teachers and students) to create whole-systems change towards a Sustainable Future.

Our main programs include:

• Resources for Rethinking (R4R), an online database of sustainability-focused classroom resources
• Our Canada Project web platform for youth to share their actions towards Canada's sustainable future
• Youth Forums engaging grade 5-12 students in understanding local sustainability issues, equipping them with the skills needed to take action, and empowering them to act in making change in their communities
• Action Project Funding supporting student-led sustainability projects
• Professional Development for teachers focused on teaching through a sustainability lens, teaching topics related to climate change, and outdoor learning, all through the use of transformative learning strategies
• Climate Change Education & Research
• Sustainable Future Schools a whole-school approach to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, weaving them into teaching and learning, partnerships, facilities and operations, and decision-making.

About the Team

You will be joining a team of 6 existing full-time staff (with additional part-time student interns, consultants, etc.). Our staff work remotely from home, but our office is located in Toronto at York University.

Duties and Responsibilities

As an independent nonprofit organization with a small staff, employees have ample opportunity to express their creativity, flexibility and initiative while gaining experience in a wide variety of areas, which include the following tasks:

• Program Coordination:
  
• Support the ongoing delivery of LSF programs such as Youth Forums, Action Project funding, in-school initiatives, and Professional Development Institutes. Tasks include promotion, administration, communications, and logistics.
• Event Coordination:
  
• Plan and execute virtual and in-person events, including identifying and developing partnerships, coordinating logistics, creating event materials and content, and engaging in public speaking when needed.
• Program and Content Development:
  
• Contribute to the creation and implementation of educational resources and program content that align with sustainability education goals.
• Web and Digital Content Management:
  
• Update and maintain LSF's main website and associated program sites, ensuring accurate and engaging content.
• Marketing & Outreach
• Support the development of social media campaigns and e-newsletters; design basic visual content such as flyers, posters, and reports when needed.
• Fundraising and Development:
  
• Assist in identifying funding opportunities, drafting grant proposals, and supporting program development to align with funder expectations.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate should have experience or skills in the following areas:

• Strong understanding of the concepts and principles of sustainability (through academic studies and/or experience in related field)
• Understanding of the Canadian education system:
  Knowledge of national and provincial education structures, curricula, and priorities
• Experience in program and event delivery/coordination:
  Skilled in planning, organizing, and executing both in-person and virtual programs and events. Able to manage logistics, coordinate stakeholders, and ensure successful delivery of outcomes.
• Research and writing:
  Proven ability to conduct research, synthesize information, and produce high-quality written content for a variety of audiences and formats, including reports, proposals, educational materials, and digital content.
• Exceptionally organized and self-motivated:
  Demonstrates strong time management, planning, and prioritization skills.
• Adaptability and flexibility, ability to manage competing priorities
• Working collaboratively in a team, with ability to self-direct and take initiative
• Education/teaching and/or previous experience working with youth
• Works well under pressure and meets tight deadlines
• Strategic and creative mindset.
• Meticulous attention to detail.
• Bilingual in English and French (preferred):
  Proficient in both written and verbal communication in English and French is an asset. Applicants comfortable in both official languages may be invited to complete a short assessment in their non-primary language.
