Poster guidelines

The objectives of this project are to

  • Allow you to explore an organic chemistry process, issue or problem.
  • Broaden the knowledge of the entire class via an in-lab presentation of your poster.
  • Develop or sharpen computer-related skills such as technical writing, poster design and drawing of chemical structures.
  • Help build project planning skills such as time-management, research skills, and problem-solving.

The poster

The objective of the poster is to educate someone about a topic that interests you in organic chemistry - lots of free reign here. As such, your poster should be written for a reader with a knowledge level equivalent to that of someone enrolled in sophomore organic chemistry course but ignorant about your particular topic. Keep your topic narrowly focused. You may presume that your audience has taken freshman chemistry, high school level chemistry, physics, and biology. Feel free to go as far with this as you like! In general, your poster should

  • inform the reader about some organic process
  • include relevant graphic images that support the text
  • exhibit elements of good design: appearance, readability, grammar, spelling,   proper background color selection.
  • cite any sources used, including other web sites

For detail guidelines and requirements for poster assignment go here (External Link)

Presentation of poster to class

  • Posters will be presented by each student during his/her regularly scheduled lab section. Arrive in lab on time and set up your poster.
  • You should be prepared to explain your poster to audience. Presentations will begin 10 minutes after class has begun.
  • All posters will be judged/graded by both the instructor and your Teaching Assistant according to the criteria outlined.
  • When the poster session is over, you are responsible for removing your poster.

Point breakdown

Your final grade for this project will be based on evaluations by both the instructor (50%) and your TA (50%) according to the following criteria:

Content  (accuracy, educational value, relevance to Organic Chemistry and other) 40 %
Structure (overall design appeal, graphics, grammar, spelling, citations, legibility, etc.) 40 %
Class Presentation (clarity, organization, preparation, answers on questions from audience) 20 %

Grading in more detail:

Your grade will be based on a weighted sum of the following items, determined during and after the presentation:

  • relevant to Organic Chemistry? 10pts
  • has a great educational value? 10pts
  • has accurate information? 10pts
  • topic matches poster content? 10pts

  • has a good design? (effective arrangement of material, uncluttered and looking professionally) 5pts
  • chemical structures are drawn in ChemDraw (i. e. not copied! ) and legible from 5-6 ft distance? 5pts
  • graphics are not blurry or pixelated? 5pts
  • figures and graphics are explained and labeled?images relevant to purpose of the poster? 5pts (for both q.)
  • "easy to follow" flow of information? consistent formatting? 5pts (for both q.)
  • has font sizes that can be read easily?correct grammar and spelling? 5pts (for both q.)
  • schemes and diagrams not excessive in detail? 5pts
  • background color does not interfere with the text? 5pts

Class presentation:

  • talk was "clear" and well organized? 5pts
  • made eye contact with audience? 5pts
  • presenter was well prepared?did not read presentation off the notes? 5pts (for both q.)
  • answered on questions from the audience? 5pts

How to fail:

  • Have no or few or improperly cited references.
  • Use illustrations that are hard to interpret.
  • Cite no sources for your figures, ideas, or other data.
  • In your talk, ramble on and on without purpose or point; or alternatively quickly finish your talk and convey little or no information.
  • Don't bother to proof read or use a spell checker.
  • Don't bother practicing.
  • Don't bother trying to understand what you are talking about.
  • Don't bother worrying about Organic Chemistry; assume that pretty pictures are all you really need.
  • Use giant or tiny type everywhere (both make it impossible to convey much information).
  • Poor presentation.

How to draw chemical structures and reactions

Rice University purchased ChemDraw software for students so they could draw chemical structures or used provided templates for their posters or other academic needs. Software is available on Owlnet PCs (Mudd lab, Fondren Library, Dell Butcher Hall, etc.)Unfortunately, CambridgeSoft Corporation, the Company which produce ChemDraw, does not supply their product with demo movies on how to draw chemical structures, 2D or 3D objects. To get you familiar with this powerful chemical drawing tool we will use short movies provided by Advanced Chemistry Development Corporation (www.acdlabs.com). ACD Corporation market their own chemical drawing program named ChemSketch. There are little differences between these two programs, ChemSketch and ChemDraw, but most of the features are the same. If for any reason you find ChemSketch more useful you can download it and use free of charge for academic purposes: (External Link) (You may be asked to fill in registration form prior to downloading.)

Questions & Answers

how can you judge a person who is bipolar?
Reynald Reply
Judge or diagnose?
Judging is done based on a person's feeling of superiority and moral high ground. This is generally just arrogance and lack of understanding. Unless you try to get an idea of what living with bi-polar personality disorder really is, and their struggle, you are judging, not diagnosing, in ignorance.

difference between mania and hypomania
Ankita Reply
Hypomania is a less severe form of mania. It actually may feel pretty good because your mood is up and you have more energy than usual, but it's not out of control. For someone with bipolar disorder, hypomania can evolve into mania. Or it can switch to serious depressio

Mania is a severe episode that may last for a week or more. A person may feel uncontrollably elated and very high in energy. These symptoms interfere with daily life, and in severe cases, a person may need to go to the hospital.
Hypomania is an episode that lasts for a few days. People may feel very good and function well. Family or friends may notice mood or activity changes, while the person with the hypomania may not.
Mania and hypomania are most often related to bipolar disorder. They can also occur as part of other mood disorders, such as schizoaffective disorder.

what is sensation and example
Sensation is the process that allows our brains to take in information via our five senses, which can then be experienced and interpreted by the brain. Sensation occurs thanks to our five sensory systems: vision, hearing, taste, smell and touch.
For example, when touched by a soft feather, mechanoreceptors, which are sensory receptors in the skin register that the skin has been touched. That sensory information is then turned into neural information through a process called transduction. Next, the neural information travels down neural p
pathways to the appropriate part of the brain, wherein the sensations are perceived as the touch of a feather.

I believe in the whole brain we need not think or even remember what events may have happened.I do think memories will always be stored like to think of the whole brain and heart.Guess that's another surgery..

I think what has occurred in our life also plays a role in our intellect.
the brain is a powerful tool for humans to handle, if you have full access to the brain, you can control pain or anything other emotions, for instance according to my research you can get pain when ever you want.
I agree with John full control of our brain we can be able to get thru anything ...
@john you mean using our memory?
painful memories, yeah you can control them too, @cherrie depression is bunch of chemicals pain is too with pain receptors and motor nerves

learning is important because without learning you wouldn't even be able to have asked that question, among a plethora of other reasons my friend.

a teacher needs to understand and explain the behavior and activities of a learner both in class room and outside the classroom.establish how this can be achieved

how can a teacher understand the behaviour change of a students in class room
observation and conservation of treasured items
how can a teacher observer the learners
Well I know a teacher who observes the overall mood of some of her students expecially ones who tend to yell at people who annoy them. She knows the steps to one of them about to go off and send the person outside for a chat (the person annoying them or the person about to go off).
another point please, How can a teacher observe the learners behavior in class
Just that observing patterns of behaviour
"observation and conservation of treasured items" All the way. Love it.

I can't answer that. I barely made it through statistiçs
i forgot to add, its Social Psychology Research
Depends on whether it's clinical OR a naturalistic research
your research has to be recognized and approved by your national psychiatric association i.e American Psyc Association and it has to be pier reviewed by a current professional in your field so maybe your professor or from a licensed psychiatric contractor.

I have a question about sex addiction how can you tell someone would have sex with anything like child man woman old young even an animal I have a feeling the guy I'm with is someone that could do anything because he has no self control and he is a narcissist that also has a addition to meth..
Alexis Reply
How did you get to meet this guy
hello may i ask How long have you been seeing this guy and what kind of signs were givin to come to this conclusion,? along with what you've shared on top here?
Facebook but we had the same friends but never met before but have been together for 5 years and its been hell I now have PTSD and now no intrest in doing what I love because he puts me down for doing so or makes me feel stupid for feeling the way I do about things
been together for 5 years things were good at first he was really nice if I needed something he made sure to get it but once I moved I with him he started calling me names but once we got our own place he got abusive and pretty much had me as a prisoner in my own home
also when he gets high he gets very turned on to the point he would masturbate several times a day only time we would have sex is if I was asleep or we would fight to the point of abusing each other then he would want to have sex but he also seemed to be very weird around kids
but if sober he wanted nothing to do with him he would actually make me take my brother to my mother's room and not let him come out and play with his toys also I had my son asleep in his room with the TV and night light on seth said he was going to get a shower well the water was on I thought he
it sounds like this guys is someone who can be very dangerous if under the influence. I highly recommend getting yourself and children away from him. He may seem like a nice guy but in my limited experience its better to play it safe not only for your own safety but especially for the children.
you gotta leave the relationship.. it sounds like it won't end so well and the fact that he's using meth; that alone is a very huge red flag
I agree with GL Rocketeer
yes I do also but I want to think it's just the drugs but he still is very one sided and not caring of others feelings
one thing I could share with u from individuals ive spoken wit is that a person who smokes or especially runs it becomes extremely "turned on" and or to the point were they'll masturbate or seek outside their relationship to satisfy their wants or needs. so honestly i dont think its a bad I idea...
fr them in this situation out of his sight, out of his mind!-
so yea id agree, pick up and flee! Good luck in your situation and may God protect u and yours during this time!
thanks you guys I've asked for advice from family but no one actually listened to me and just pushed it aside
I also agree wit miss april, about methin around wit this guy, and already abused u already kno wat ones capable of. theroriticly if one day he looses his sack or been up for few days to were sleep deprivation begins to alter his jugment and emotions , possibilitys Are high, and could hurt someone
it is better to make a plan, get everything ready. Then make your move, if it is drug out over time and this guy still has access to you. He will try to convince you he will change and stop. He will agree with everything you say to make you believe him. it will be lies.

A friend of mine experiences homicidal thoughts. She doesn't believe she would act upon it, but it definitely happens more than the average person (which, most people at least in one point in their lives experience homicidal thoughts). She is a diagnosed sociopath.
Corrupt Reply
Mostly I feel she would need a hobby or a purpose in life.. Finding determination to achieve something is tough for some people already, in your friend's condition it's even more challenging
Friends and family are important support system.. She also has to reach out for help
she is bored if the normal life, basically the drama is more around her I guess, so try to give her some puzzle, question her about, basically she is in chaotic thoughts, guess she has been watching some movies with homicidal content
A person who is bored with life, won't find anything to distract her. She needs someone who will listen to why she feels like this, and ask her what would make her happy, and work with what she answers
i agree with Samrat and John
@jessamine, sociopath behavior, if we keep on asking her questions about happy in the beginning of the treatment, she might be aggressive on happy
Didn't know she was aggressive
And Jessamine
Many things to take into account before actually doing something. psychologists have to analyze the person see how they act and respond
sociopathic aggression will be manipulation or conning, sociopaths can turn a person strength into weakness, and if piss off a sociopath the effect will be on others I mean surroundings will be effected or people, sometimes they might hurt themselves, they are incapable of love, I guess if we ask
questions or puzzles, manipulated people need some juice to brain and that juice is puzzles, or questions about her thoughts
yeah valid point miss @jessamine
good day can I ask something here?
what is the different of alters and multiple personality disorder? sorry I just want to know another answers about it *look down*
