[Long the standard critical edition of the poetic fragments. Later editions have not significantly improved the text but have made major bibliographic additions. Generally abbreviated FPL in citation, but sometimes ‘Morel’. Also of importance among poetic fragments is the material in R. Astbury, ed. M. Terentii Varronis Saturarum Menippearum fragmenta (Leipzig: Teubner, 1985).]

See also the following two works that supplement FPL:

Bini, M.  Index morelianus . Bologna. 1980.

Traina, A., and M. Bini.  Supplementum morelianum . 2d ed. Bologna. 1990.

Ribbeck, O. Scaenicae Romanorum poesis fragmenta . Vol. 1. Tragicorum fragmenta .

Vol. 2. Comicorum fragmenta . Leipzig. 1871-3. 2d ed. Reprint. Hildesheim. 1962.

[Long the standard critical edition of the fragments of Roman drama, generally cited as ‘Ribbeck’ or simply ‘R’ after the fragment number. It is seriously outdated. A replacement edition initiated by Widu-Wolfgang Ehlers and Bernd Seidensticker (Berlin) and now headed by Markus Schauer (Bamberg) is being published by Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht under the title Tragicorum Romanorum Fragmenta (TrRF). Four volumes are projected:

Vol. I: Livius Andronicus, Naevius, Tragici minores, Adespota by Markus Schauer Vol. II: Ennius by Gesine Manuwald Vol. III: Pacuvius by Nils Rücker Vol. IV: Accius by Peter Kruschwitz

The first two volumes appeared in 2012.]

Major anthologies of fragmentary texts

Courtney, E. The Fragmentary Latin Poets . Oxford: University Press, 1993.

Hollis, A.S. Fragments of Roman Poetry c. 60 BC-AD 20 . Oxford: University Press, 2007.

[These two monumental editions with translation and commentary differ slightly in chronological range and focus. Both are excellent works of scholarship, Hollis perhaps a little fuller and more philologically oriented.]

Major editions of fragmentary authors

Naevius

Barchiesi, M . Nevio epico; storia, interpretazione, edizione critica dei frammenti del primo epos latino . Padova: Cedam, 1962.

Strzelecki, L. ed. Cn. Naevii Belli Punici carminis quae supersunt. Leipzig: Teubner, 1964.

[These two works remain essential for the study of the Bellum Punicum . Strzelecki’s text and numbering are preferable to those in FPL, and the wide-ranging commentary by Marino Barchiesi has not been superseded.]

Ennius

Jocelyn, H. D. The Tragedies of Ennius. (Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries.) Cambridge: University Press, 1967.

[The authoritative edition with commentary. The introduction forms an excellent introduction to all of Republican tragedy, not just the work of Ennius. Now also see TrRF, vol. 2.]

Russo, A. Quinto Ennio. Le opere minori . Pisa: Edizioni ETS, 2007.

[Two volumes are projected. This first volume contains the fragments, testimonia, and extensive commentary on Praecepta, Protrepticus, Saturae, Scipio , and Sota . Full and reliable.]

Skutsch, O. The Annals of Q. Ennius. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1985.

[Monumental edition with important introductory essay, extensive commentary, and valuable indices.]

Flores, E., et al. Quinto Ennio. Annali. Introduzione, testo critico con apparato, traduzione, e commentari. 5 vols. Naples: Liguori, 2000-09.

vol. 1&2: Annali (libri I-VIII) , Text and Translation (1), Commentary (2) vol. 3&4: Annali (libri IX-XVIII) Text and Translation (3), Commentary (4) vol. 5: Annali, unplaced fragments and full bibliography

[Monumental edition including Italian translation and extensive commentary. The text and translation must be used with extreme caution, with strong preference given to Skutsch, but the commentary can be very helpful, especially on historical and literary matters where Skutsch is sometimes weak.]

Vahlen, J. Ennianae Poesis Reliquae . Leipzig: Teubner, 1928. Reprinted 1967.

[Long the standard edition of all the poetic fragments, now superseded by Manuwald and Jocelyn, Rossi, and Skutsch, but still useful for testimonia and indices.]

Lucilius

Marx, F. C. Lucilii Carminum Reliquiae. Leipzig: Teubner, 1904-5.

[Still the standard edition of Lucilius, although the interpretive comments need to be assessed against more recent secondary literature.]

Krenkel, W. Lucilius Satiren. 2 vols. Leiden: Brill, 1970.

[An elegant edition with facing German translation and abbreviated commentary. The interpretations have not won universal acceptance.]

Laberius

Panayotakis, C. Decimus Laberius: The Fragments . (Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries.) Cambridge: University Press, 2010.

[Text and translation, along with highly detailed commentary of the most famous late Republican writer of mimes. The extensive introduction serves as an excellent introduction to the whole genre, not just to the career of Laberius.]

Other dramatists

Dangel, J., ed. 1995. Accius. Oeuvres (fragments) . Paris: les Belles Lettres, 1995.

Guardì, T. Fabula togata: i frammenti. Introduzione, testo, traduzione e commento . Milan: Jaca Book, 1985.

Cato the elder

Sblendorio Cugusi, M. T., ed. M. Porci Catonis Orationum reliquiae. Introduzione, testo critico e commento filologico . Turin: G.B. Paravia, 1982.

Calboli, G. Marci Porci Catonis Oratio pro Rhodiensibus. Introduzione, edizione critica dei frammenti, traduzione e commento . Bologna: Pàtron, 1978.

[These two works provide rich treatment of the elder Cato, whose speeches are the most extensively preserved of the Republican orators.]

Cicero

Crawford, J. W. M. Tullius Cicero: The Fragmentary Speeches . Second Edition. Atlanta: Scholars Pres, 1994.

[Edition with commentary.]

——. M. Tullius Cicero: The Lost and Unpublished Orations . Göttingen: Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht, 1984.

[The testimonia gathered here provides a very helpful way to take a fuller measure of Cicero’s oratorical career.]
