Provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Performs routine and complex laboratory tests in Flow Cytometry laboratory to provide clinicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. This position will involve the theoretical and practical application of knowledge in medical laboratory science. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Performs waived, highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision for which she is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Operates, calibrates, and troubleshoots Flow Cytometry instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Recognizes when professional vendor service is required and requests service if instrument is covered under a service contract. Reports unresolved service needs to supervisor.
- Performs quality control (QC) procedures as specified in lab section SOPs and maintains QC records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
- Follows appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport, and recording procedures for Flow Cytometry specimens. Functions as a resource for interpreting specimen acceptability.
- Processes data, validates assay accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory information system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information in a timely manner.
- Identifies the technical, instrumental, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected results.
- Assists in evaluation and selection of new Flow Cytometry equipment. Designs, implements, and/or evaluates new testing procedures as requested. Validates new methods.
- Evaluates and calculates QC statistics to assess efficacy of current laboratory methods.
- Monitors QC and participates in data collection for quality assurance (QA) indicators, as assigned.
- Understands the theory of laboratory procedures and identifies and correlates all potential causes of unexpected test results.
- Develops solutions to problems based on knowledge of assay principles, patient diagnosis, and instrument performance.
- Resolves and documents resolution of all QC results which fail lab criteria and institutes corrective action.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current American Society for Clinical Pathology Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP-MLS) Generalist certification
- Knowledge of each of the following:
- Hematology and cell morphology.
- Relevant sections of the clinical laboratory including Hematology, Molecular, Immunology and Serology.
- Laboratory information systems, databases, and spreadsheets
- Flow cytometer instrumentation, including performing QC and troubleshooting of flow cytometry instruments.
- College of American Pathologist proficiency testing.
- Interpretation of slide cell morphology.
- Setting up sample types for flow cytometry testing.
- Communicating with pathologists regarding testing.
- Taking inventory of flow cytometry stock and order.
