A Director of Public Policy who supports our public policy, regulatory and industry data initiatives related to Canada's music sector.
The position can be based in either Ottawa or Toronto.
Reporting to the Vice President of Corporate Affairs and working closely with the General Counsel, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Vice President of Finance and the CEO, responsibilities include the following:
assist in the development of public policy strategies and help execute federal and provincial government relations (GR) initiatives; monitor federal and provincial legislation, regulatory and policy matters affecting the music sector and advise with respect to policy challenges and opportunities; facilitate meetings with government officials and elected members as required, prepare briefing notes and supporting materials for the appropriate Music Canada representatives and attend those meetings when required; identify research and expert analysis needed to support music sector initiatives, and work with other Music Canada team members in order to secure required regulatory and policy submissions, acting as a resource for outside consultants, experts and counsel as needed; run Music Canada's regular industry data gathering work and use that information to help inform Music Canada's public policy advocacy and communications work; work closely with teams from Canada's major labels and the international organization IFPI on regulatory, public policy and industry data gathering initiatives; identify opportunities for collaboration with outside organizations to support music sector initiatives and develop relationships as required; and support the CEO in the scheduling of and preparation for events, meetings and media engagements.
The Candidate:
The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:
Degree in, and 3+ years of experience in, politics, public policy, law, entertainment, business or related fields; able to create factual, relevant, and easily understandable talking points and other messaging; highly effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; is a self-starter who can take general direction and produce specific results; able to synthesize policy documents for internal and external audiences; able to think critically, process data from multiple sources, forecast potential scenarios, prioritize based on probability and desired outcome, and recommend a best course of action; and anticipate challenges/obstacles that the music sector could face as the public policy landscape in Canada evolves.
The successful candidate will be Music Canada's eyes and ears, tracking everything from committee hearings, Question Period and political social media.
With strong research and written skills, you will write summaries on current events, look for political opportunities and contribute to and implement government relations, public policy and regulatory strategies.
A successful candidate will also build working relationships with our external partners and consulting firms.
Music Canada gathers industry based data which then informs its public policy work.
The successful candidate will work closely with both internal and external teams to gather that data and identify opportunities to inform Music Canada's broader work.
The position will require a high degree of teamwork and the ability to collaborate from within Music Canada and with its members, partners and external consulting firms.
They will have strong analytical, drafting and organization skills, as well as excellent communication skills.
Although not a requirement, French language proficiency would be an asset.
