Reporting to the Fire Marshal, the Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and prevention within structures and properties in Nunavut.
The DFM assists in providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public (clients) regarding the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations (NFSA).
The Deputy Fire Marshal will assist clients to facilitate the highest standard of fire and life safety within structures and properties.
In conjunction with the Fire Marshal, the DFM ensures that inspections of structures and properties are carried out to verify that fire and life safety measures meet at least the minimum standard.
The DFM will assist the Fire Marshal in ensuring that full investigations are conducted into allegations of violations of the NFSA and will ensure appropriate compliance actions are taken if and when they are required.
The DFM will assist the Fire Marshal in ensuring that an investigation occurs in the event of any fire or explosion to determine the cause, origin and contributing factors.
In conjunction with the Fire Marshal, the DFM is responsible for verifying that the development of educational materials and the delivery of training meet the goals of the Fire Safety Act.
QUALIFICATIONS
Your profile as a qualified Deputy Fire Marshal will include the following highlights:
- Five (5) years' experience in the fire service as a Fire Officer.
- The following IFSAC and/or ProBoard certifications:
- NFPA 1021 - Level 1, Fire Officer
- NFPA 1001 - Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification
- NFPA 1031 - Level 2, Fire Inspector
- NFPA 1033 - Fire Investigator
- NFPA 1035 - Level 1, Fire and Life Safety Educator
- NFPA 1041 - Level 2, Fire Service Instructor
- Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.

ASSETS
- NFPA 1002 - Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications.
- Class 3 Driver's License c/w Air Brake Certification.
- Fluency in two or more of Nunavut's official languages (i.e., Inuktut, English and French).
- Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, and land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and Inuktut.
- Experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment.
NOTE:
This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
Compensation & Benefits
This indeterminate position is included in the Nunavut Employees Union and offers a salary range of $130,698 to $148,348 per year (for 37.5 hours/week), plus a Northern Allowance of $16,008 per year.
Subsidized staff housing is also available.
