We are hiring an Observability Engineering Manager to lead the development of distributed tracing or service mesh products within our Observability group.
Role Overview
Engineering managers at Canonical are technically skilled coders who review and lead architecture and code. They are also judges of character, setting expectations and ensuring accountability. The role involves building an observability stack optimized for Kubernetes, integrating open source tools for metrics, logging, telemetry, alerting, tracing, and profiling, aiming for pervasive adoption across software practices.
The implementation of Kubernetes operators is resilient, scalable, and provides deep insights, with a focus on a seamless user experience and smooth operational management. This position offers an exciting opportunity for those passionate about open source, Linux, Kubernetes, and Observability to work with top talent and advance open-source observability standards.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a distributed team of engineers and oversee the observability portfolio.
Lead team processes to achieve objectives.
Conduct one-on-one meetings and measure team health indicators.
Engage with the community and represent Canonical at conferences.
Review code and contribute to architectural decisions.
Candidate Profile
Strong academic background from high school and university.
Proven experience in software delivery, preferably with open source.
Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year.
Fluent in English, with experience in Linux (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
Results-driven, curious, flexible, and accountable.
Nice-to-Have Skills
Experience as an engineering manager and with high-performance teams.
Professional Python development and knowledge of Go.
Open source contributions and experience with container technologies.
Understanding of observability and monitoring solutions.
