The Opportunity: Infrastructure Engineer - Nginx
We're on the hunt for an experienced DevOps Engineer who is passionate about designing and maintaining scalable, resilient infrastructure. This role is critical to the success of the PPC+ migration program within Services Australia, a flagship initiative to uplift national digital services.
You will be instrumental in setting up, optimizing, automating, and supporting Angular applications hosted on Nginx/Node. js, while ensuring performance, compliance, and knowledge continuity.
- Design and configure Angular-Nginx components to support a large-scale PPC+ migration
- ️ Optimize deployments of applications written in Angular and Node. js to ensure reliability, performance, and scalability
- ️ Implement systems across cloud/hybrid environments with minimal downtime
- Use Python scripting and GitLab DevOps pipelines to automate repetitive infrastructure and deployment tasks
- Support application integration, testing, and go-live readiness across all environments
- Adhere to delivery schedules and government-mandated milestones
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success, minimize risks, and escalate challenges early
- ️ Implement structured change and release management practices for risk mitigation
- Monitor infrastructure and system health across all environments
- ️ Troubleshoot latency, availability, and load-balancing issues in production and staging
- Proactively analyze infrastructure performance trends and provide tuning recommendations
- Ensure configurations and deployments align with Australian Government security and compliance frameworks
- ️️ Support risk assessment and audit documentation
- Embed encryption, access control, logging, and patch management best practices in all deployments
- Conduct knowledge-sharing sessions, walkthroughs, and mentoring with internal teams
- Produce detailed operational and technical documentation, including runbooks, playbooks, and architectural diagrams
- Support a smooth transition to long-term internal support teams post-project

Must-Have Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience with Nginx, Angular, and Node. js infrastructure and deployment patterns
- Proficient in Python scripting to automate environment builds and DevOps pipelines
- Deep knowledge of GitLab CI/CD workflows and best practices
- ️ Familiar with hybrid and cloud-native environments (e. g. , AWS, Azure, private cloud)
- Solid understanding of infrastructure monitoring tools, log aggregation, and alerting
- Strong grasp of cybersecurity principles and how to embed them into infrastructure
Government Experience (Highly Desirable)
- Experience delivering digital platforms for federal agencies or programs
- Understanding of security clearance processes, compliance mandates, and ICT governance frameworks (e. g. , ISM, PSPF)
- Ability to prepare system documentation, including compliance assessments and project artifacts
This role is based in Services Australia's Canberra office, and the first 6 weeks require full-time onsite attendance. After that, a hybrid arrangement will be considered.
